What is Grammar?

   English grammar is a system or rule that is used as a "reference" for constructing sentences. If you ask, “Is grammar important?” Of course the answer is "important". You see, a language cannot function without grammar. Oh yes, grammar is generally present based on the basic structure of language that is known by every native speaker.


What is the difference between tenses and grammar? 

   Grammar is the grammar or structure used in forming sentences, while tenses are part of grammar, namely grammar categories that emphasize changing verb forms to indicate the time of an activity or situation.
What is Grammar in English? What material is in grammar? English grammar material starts from the alphabet, punctuation, words, phrases, clauses, sentences, including tenses. Actually grammar material is very broad, but English Academy will only discuss grammar that is popular and beginner friendly as below: 


1. Letters or Alphabet (Alphabet)
 
   Before discussing more complex material, of course the first thing you need to master from a language is about spelling. Spelling is a description of the sound of language. Well, the first component that must be learned in spelling is letters alias letters, or we also know them as the alphabet (alphabet). English has a total of 26 alphabets, namely a b c d e f g h i j k l m n op q r s t u v w x y z.


2. Punctuation (Punctuation) 

   In English, punctuation is called punctuation. Punctuation is important in a spelling of writing. The reason is, punctuation functions to arrange the structure and organization of writing, and can determine intonation and pauses during reading.



3. Word (Word) 

   When studying English spelling, we will also be familiar with the process of forming a word. The word is a unit of language that has a meaning or one meaning.

a. Noun (Noun) 

   Noun is a form of word classification that is used to name a person, place, idea, idea, thought, or thing. Examples of nouns such as table, chair which are countable nouns.  b. Verb (Verb) 

   Verb or verb is a word that describes the action taken by someone. There are three forms of verbs, namely base form a.k.a basic verb (also known as infinitive and Verb 1), simple past (Verb 2), and past participle form (Verb 3). In English, there are at least 11 types of verbs that have their respective functions, the most popular are regular verbs such as move/moved/moved, then there are irregular verbs such as sing/sang/ sung, as well as auxiliary verbs such as to be is/am/are, was/were and have/has. Examples of English verbs are drive, write, see, call, and many more.


c. Pronouns (Pronouns) 

   When making a sentence which is then arranged into a paragraph, we must ensure that there are no repetitions in mentioning the subject. So, to avoid repetition, there is something called a pronoun. Examples of pronouns are he, mine, ours, the boy, and many more. 


d. Adjective (Adjective) 

   Adjectives are adjectives to explain, describe, or limit pronouns or nouns that are still in general form. Examples that include adjectives are tall, slim, fat, and strong.


 e. Adverb (Adverb)

   An event that is packaged in a tense sentence will usually be equipped with adverbs, especially adverbs of time such as yesterday, last night, this morning, and others. So, what is an adverb? So, adverbs are adverbs to explain or provide additional information about adjectives, verbs, sentences, or the adverb itself. 


f. Prepositions

   As a beginner who is just learning part of speech, it might be a little difficult to understand how to use prepositions. Prepositions are prepositions that function to show the relationship in space or time between one thing and another. You must be familiar with examples of prepositions such as above, at, in, on, under which are prepositions of place, which are prepositions used to indicate a place.


g. Conjunction (Conjunction)

   It will be easier for you to understand a sentence if the sentence is arranged using a conjunction, which is a connecting word. This part of speech is a form of words to connect equivalent language units (word to word, phrase to phrase, clause to clause, and so on). Examples of conjunctions are and, but, also, for, or, and many more. The following is an example of a sentence using a conjunction: Clara and Zara visited Rahma's birthday party yesterday. (Clara and Zara visited Rahma's birthday party yesterday.) 


h. Determiner (Explaining Word)

   As explained in the article Various Types of Determiners in English and Examples, a determiner is a word that introduces a noun or provides information about the quantity of a noun. Examples of determiners are a, an, and the. See an example of its application in the sentences below: I have an apple. (I have an apple.) 


i. Interjection 

   Interjection is a word used to show one's emotions towards the atmosphere, situation or action that occurs. Here's an example: Wow, Nanda is so beautiful with her red gown! (Wow, Nanda is so pretty in her red dress!)


4. Phrases (Phrases)

   Phrases or phrases are groups of words consisting of two or more words that give meaning to a unit of language. There are 11 forms of phrases in English. For example, a noun phrase that functions to describe a noun. Example sentences are as follows: Alfi rents a beautiful luxury car. (Alfi rents a beautiful luxury car.) From the sentence above, what can be counted as a phrase is the one in bold. 


5. Clause (Clause)

   A clause is a group of words consisting of a subject and a predicate. When forming a sentence, there will be at least one clause in it. Well, basically clauses are divided into two types, namely independent clauses (can stand alone) and dependent clauses (depend on other clauses). Consider the following example clause: Independent clause: Esye was sleeping. Dependent clause: When I arrived home. 


6. Sentence (sentence)

   The next material that you need to learn after the definite clause is a sentence or sentence. Sentence is a set of words with a complete component consisting of a subject and predicate, which contains a complete meaning. A sentence can consist of a main clause, or it can be followed by one or more subordinate clauses. Example of sentences: Declarative sentence: The girl goes to the supermarket with her husband every Sunday. There are many types of sentences in English, ranging from declarative sentences, imperative sentences, negative sentences, interrogative sentences, complex sentences, and many more.


7. Tenses

   Well, tenses is a very familiar grammar. Maybe some people think that grammar in English is just about tenses. Even though it's not like that, friend. So, tenses are sentence patterns that are formed based on the time and nature of an incident or event. There are 16 types of English tenses which are divided into four categories, namely present tense, future tense, past tense, and past future tense. Then).
